885 Greatest Songs of All Time

As I sit here typing this post, I am listening via the Internet to #592 on this list "Peace Frog", from the Morrison Hotel album, by the Doors as voted on by listeners of WXPN (one of my three most-listened-to radio stations1 around here, the other two being WRTI [jazz] and WHYY [NPR news]). The deejays are working their way down [up?] the list from every day from 6 AM till 10 PM until they're done. I figure that will be sometime late Friday or early Saturday.

It's great to listen to these songs. They include everything from "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday (#717) and "Blue in Green" by Miles Davis (#862), to "Speeding Motorcycle" by Daniel Johnston (#856), and even some classical music is reportedly coming. Some 45,000 people submitted some 10,000 different songs on personal Top 10 lists (station staff and some musicians have their personal lists posted). I declined to participate. I simply couldn't imagine how to generate a list of my favorite 10 songs. How does one go about deciding which one is #1? I don't know, and I don't care at all to try to determine that for myself. I'm glad everyone else did though, because now I can enjoy quite an eclectic mix of music for the next few days.

1I'm a regular contributor to all three and I encourage anyone who appreciates [mostly] non-commercial radio to contribute to media diversity by financially supporting their own such stations.
